There is a fantastic program for the alternative operating system called LinuxMCE (Media Center Edition) which will give you all of the functionality of the Windows version with a ton of extra features and a lot more power to do exactly what you want with your computer.

Whichever system you choose to go with, all you have to do is hook up your computer video projector up to your computer and follow the on screen instructions to adjust the settings on your video and audio output. For most installs, it will only take a few short minutes to get your very own media center hooked up in your home with all of the audio you could imagine blasting out of your speakers and an amazing looking high definition video feed from your computer video projector.
